CBK Zuidoost

Centrum Beeldende Kunst Zuidoost (CBK Zuidoost) makes contemporary visual arts accessible to a diverse audience and, through its activities, simultaneously contributes to the livelihood of artists and the development of their work.

We program exhibitions, commission works, have an artist-in-residence program, manage a workshop for professionals and amateurs, own an art lending collection, and realize a wide range of educational activities. As a platform and makerspace, CBK Zuidoost also fuels the discussion on relevant social developments. Intercultural action and audience-oriented programming are in our DNA. Our location, the Amsterdam Bijlmermeer, is our source of inspiration and catalyst. Furthermore, CBK Zuidoost has been connecting local, metropolitan, and international art production and art experience for over 35 years.

Job description in context

Every year, CBK Zuidoost programs five group exhibitions in-house. Some of these exhibitions are curated by the permanent curator. These exhibitions are socially engaged and intersectional in nature. They reflect on identity-forming themes such as history and heritage, but also on matters like gender, religion, sexual orientation, and more general socio-political developments.

To contribute to further diversification of the cultural ecosystem, CBK Zuidoost has for several years invited a guest curator-specifically an emerging guest curator of color-to curate one exhibition under the name NEXT. As a guest curator, you develop your own exhibition concept, which you then also execute. The final result is a group exhibition with your own signature, fitting within the general profile of CBK Zuidoost.

In the fall of 2027, we want to realize an exhibition centered around the theme of Ecology and Climate.

Tasks

• Development of a group exhibition project proposal: formulating a clear, substantive work plan
• Project management; studio visits, process planning, communication, coordinating with internal and external third parties
• Financial management: preparing a budget and monitoring expenditures
• Setting up and dismantling the exhibition with artists
• Providing guided tours during the exhibition
• Developing and supervising activities related to public programming during the exhibition
• Reporting on the results in a final report (effects and outcomes)

Profile

As our temporary colleague 'junior curator of exhibitions', you have:

• a good command of the Dutch and English languages, both spoken and written
• a relevant, completed professional education (HBO or WO) and/or some relevant work experience. It is also possible that you have recently completed a professional education as an artist and want to broaden your horizons by working as a curator. In that case, some relevant work experience is also an advantage
• a connection with the Zuidoost district, for example because you live and/or have lived and/or work there

Furthermore, you can perform tasks independently, you are reliable, representative, and communicative, and you fit within the CBK Zuidoost team.
